Le Devoir ("The Duty"), founded by journalist Henri Bourassa, began publishing in 1910. Initially, the newspaper served as the official publication for the Ligue Nationaliste organization, which advocated for the rights of French Canadians and supported Canadian autonomy awhile remaining part of the British Empire.
