The Hawaii Tribune-Herald is a daily newspaper distributed in the Hilo area on the east side of Hawaii's Big Island.
The newspaper resulted from several mergers of Hilo-area newspapers. The first, Hilo Tribune, began publication on November 23, 1895 and changed its name to the Hilo Daily Tribune in 1917. The Hawaii Herald (August 13, 1896 to February 22, 1923) was another predecessor paper. The Hilo Tribune-Herald, formed from a merger of Hilo Daily Tribune, Daily Post-Herald and Hawaii Herald, began publishing on February 19, 1923. It continued with that name until March of 1964, when it assumed its present name.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald is owned by Oahu Publications, which also publishes the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and West Hawaii Today.
Oahu Publications is a division of Black Press Ltd. of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada which is majority-owned by David Holmes Black of Victoria. where it owns Sound Publishing. The company also owns the San Francisco Examiner and SF Weekly newspapers in California.
