The Portland Press Herald is the largest daily newspaper in the state of Maine, covering news and events in the coastal city of Portland and across southern and midcoast Maine. It began publication in 1862 on Congress Street, near the Old Port section of the city of Portland. Its Sunday edition is called the Maine Sunday Telegram.
On April 28, 2015, Maine businessmen Reade Brower and Chris Miles reached a deal to purchase MaineToday Media, the newspaper group that owns the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal in Augusta and the Waterville Morning Sentinel. As of October 2019, Brower controlled six of Maine's seven daily newspapers and over 20 weekly publications through MaineToday Media, Mainely Media and Masthead Maine.
In June 2023, Brower announced a plan to sell the 5 daily and 17 weekly newspapers he owned in Maine to the nonprofit National Trust for Local News. The deal was completed on July 31, 2023. These papers are now owned by the Maine Trust for Local News, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Local News.
