On August 1, 2017, publisher Sun Media Group was sold to Reade Brower, a Maine entrepreneur who also owned MaineToday Media, which included the Portland Press Herald, Waterville Sentinel and the Kennebec Journal. He was also the owner of Alliance Press, a commercial printing company in Brunswick which published four weeklies in midcoast Maine -- The Free Press in Rockland, The Courier-Gazette in Rockland, The Camden Herald and The Republican Journal in Belfast.As of October 2019, Brower controlled six of Maine's seven daily newspapers and over 20 weekly publications.
In June 2023, Brower announced a plan to sell the 5 daily and 17 weekly newspapers he owned in Maine to the nonprofit National Trust for Local News. The deal was completed on July 31, 2023 and these papers are now owned by the Maine Trust for Local News, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Local News.
