KWTV TV 9 is the CBS network affiliate in Oklahoma City. It is the sister station of KSBI TV 52, also owned by Griffin Communications. The two stations share studios and a website. KWTV airs the local and state news service "News 9 Now" on its digital subchannel 9.2. The content of News 9 Now comes from KWTV and KOTV TV 6 in Tulsa, another Griffin Communications station.
KWTV TV began broadcasting on December 20, 1953. It was owned by grocery magnate John Griffin and his brother-in-law Jimmy Leake. The call letters were selected to represent "World's Tallest Video," after the station's tower, which was to be the tallest in the world at 1,577 feet. Griffin and Leake bought out their minority partners in 1963 and Leake sold his interest to Griffin in 1968.
