The newspaper began publication in 1975 and was founded by the Wenzel family. In March 2015, Kristi Hine bought the paper and continues to publish it in the 100-year old former print shop on Main Street in Wessington Springs. The True Dakotan is printed at a facility owned by Forum Communications in Sioux Falls.
