The newspaper is published once a week.

The Fence Post is a national agricultural newspaper reaching over 80,000 readers each week. It covers all aspects of farming and ranching including livestock auctions, horse events, ag calendar listings and market reports. The paper also publishes a classified section and seasonal specials including Real Estate Guide, Breeders Connection and Summer Events Guide. On the lighter side it presents recipes, cartoons, human interest stories and columns by popular western writers.

The paper began when Don McMillen started the Rocky Mountain Fence Post in Bellvue, Colorado in 1980. Swift Communications acquired it in 1984, adding the Nebraska (Plains) Fence Post in 1995 and The Western Slope Fence Post in 2005, which are no longer published.

In December 2021, Ogden Newspapers of West Virginia acquired the newspapers of Swift Communications and chose to keep using the Swift company name for them. The company managing the non-newspaper assets of Swift was then renamed Questor Corporation.

This newspaper is owned by Ogden Newspapers, Inc.
