The station is an affiliate of the PBS Television Network.

WJCT TV 7, Jax PBS, is a community-supported PBS member station serving Jacksonville and the First Coast, referring to the Northeast Florida region. It is part of WJCT Public Media which also operates public radio station WJCT FM 89.9. The two stations share studios and staff.

WJCT TV first went on the air in September 1958 as an educational television broadcaster. It became a charter member station of The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) when it began operations in 1969. On February 24, 2021, WJCT TV was rebranded as Jax PBS.

On April 6, 2009, WJCT shut off its analog transmission. The previous digital signal broadcast on channel 38 was moved over to channel 7.
