Belta, an abbreviation of Belarusian Telegraph Agency, is the official news agency of Belarus which describes itself as "the most respected source of up-to-the-minute news about Belarus' supreme authorities." The agency produces 150 to 170 news items each day covering government edicts and the political, economic, cultural and sports life of Belarus. Belta's photo service releases over 100 photos each day.
The agency also publishes the weekly newspaper 7 Dnei, the quarterly Economy of Belarus and the monthly magazine Belaruskaya Dumka, which covers politics, culture and policy. Belta was established during the Russian Revolution on December 23, 1918. The agency had close cooperation with the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS) until the end of the Soviet Union in 1991.
