Novaya Gazeta ("New Newspaper"), Russia's leading independent newspaper, has managed to operate relatively free of control or influence by the Russian government of Vladimir Putin. However, it was forced to suspend print and digital publication on March 28, 2022 due to threats from the Putin regime. It said the suspension will continue "until the end of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine."
Based in Moscow, the paper is published in print three times a week in the Russian language and an English-language newsletter called Russia, Explained is produced once each week.
The newspaper was founded in 1993 by Editor-in-Chief Dmitry Muratov. Mikhail Gorbachev, a former president of the Soviet Union, helped fund the opening of Novaya Gazeta with some of the money from his 1990 Nobel Peace Prize. In October 2021, Muratov won the Nobel Peace Prize along with Maria Ressa, the founder of Rappler in the Philippines.
The newspaper has been subjected to repeated attacks and seven of its journalists have been murdered since 2000.
The website is presented in the Russian language.
