The Boston Herald is a tabloid newspaper tracing its history back to the original Boston Herald, founded in 1846 as a single two-sided sheet of news published by a group of Boston printers. The paper was sold for one cent.
The Herald has had a variety of names and many owners through the years. Most recently, on March 19, 2018 Alden Global Capital, which controls newspaper publisher MediaNews Group, bought the paper in a bankruptcy auction.
The previous owner was Pat Purcell, a former executive at News Corporation who had owned the Herald since 1994. Documents in the bankruptcy case showed that Purcell was most recently paying himself $970,000 per year as the newspaper's publisher. The Boston Globe reported that he was also "doling out some $265,000 in salaries among his three daughters."
