Foster's Daily Democrat was founded by Joshua L. Foster and published its first issue on June 18, 1873. It was owned by the Foster family until 2014, when the Geo. J. Foster Company was sold to an affiliate of GateHouse Media. The Sunday edition of the paper is called Foster's Sunday Citizen.
The Daily Democrat is part of Seacoast Media Group, a collection of daily and weekly newspapers along the coast of Southern Maine and New Hampshire with its headquarters in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. On November 19, 2019, the paper became part of Gannett Company when the owner of GateHouse Media bought Gannett and merged it with GateHouse under the Gannett name.
