KPHO TV 5 is the CBS network affiliate station in Phoenix, Arizona. Along with sister station KTVK TV 3, it is branded as "Arizona's Family" and together they broadcast over 100 hours of live news each week.
On December 4, 1949, KPHO became Arizona's first TV station. For the first few months, the station signed on around 4 p.m. daily and signed off between 10pm and midnight. The first programs aired by KPHO were created for children, including "The Man From Planet X" and "The Lew King Show." KPHO was the first Arizona station to telecast local live programs, to cover sports events with remote telecasts and to telecast underwater.
On December 1, 2021, Gray Television closed on its acquisition of KPHO, KTVK and the rest of the Local Media Group of Meredith Corporation, adding 17 television stations in 12 markets to the Gray portfolio.

Gray Television to Buy Meredith Corporation's TV Stations
-- May 3, 2021: Gray Television will pay $2.7 billion to acquire the 17 television stations of Meredith Corporation. Meredith, known for publishing national magazines for women, will use the funds to pay off the debt it took on in buying Time Inc. in 2018.
