The Elmira Star-Gazette is a daily newspaper covering news and events in the city of Elmira, New York and the "Twin Tiers," a group of counties along the border of New York and Pennsylvania.
The paper was founded in 1828 as the Elmira Gazette, which was published weekly. In 1906, Frank Gannett bought half-ownership of the newspaper, marking the beginning of what would become Gannett Company, now the largest newspaper publisher in the United States. Gannett soon merged the Elmira Gazette with a competitor, the Evening Star, to form the Star-Gazette. In 1923, Gannett bought two other competing papers -- the morning Daily Advertiser and the Sunday Telegram. The Star-Gazette and Advertiser combined to form a single newspaper in 1963. It switched from afternoon to morning publication in 1982.
Circulation estimate: 15,172
This newspaper is owned by Gannett Company, Inc.
