Forward

The Forward is a weekly newspaper in New York City, New York, USA for people of the Jewish religion.

The newspaper is published once a week on Friday.

The Forward was launched in 1897 as a Yiddish-language daily newspaper in New York City called the Jewish Daily Foward. It served as a defender of trade unionism and moderate, democratic socialism. The founding editor of the paper was Abraham Cahan, who made it the voice of Jewish immigrants and the conscience of the ghetto.

Today the newspaper is a digital-only service in English and Yiddish covering the varieties of Jewish experience, offering "news that matters to American Jews." Print publication was ended after the release of the April 2019 issue. Owner The Forward Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded on April 22, 1897.

The Forward Gets $500,000 from Craig Newmark
-- On July 16, 2019, The Forward said that it has received a donation of $500,000 from Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist. By offering online classified advertising mostly free of charge, Craigslist played a significant role in the decline of print media revenues in the 21st century. In April 2019, The Forward stopped publishing in print.

Jodi Rudoren Named Editor in Chief of The Forward
-- Former New York Times editor and reporter Jodi Rudoren is the new editor in chief of The Forward, the Jewish publication in New York City, the New York Times reported on July 23, 2019. Rudoren is expected to begin her new job in September. The hiring of Rudoren follows The Forward's decision to end print publication. Along with that change, the company let go of almost 30 percent of its staff including Editor in Chief Jane Eisner and Executive Editor Dan Friedman.

The Forward, Jewish Newspaper in New York City, Ends Print Publication

Abigail Jones is now digital features editor and Adam Langer arts and culture editor at Forward, effective August 2012. Jones joins from the iPad-only Daily, while Langer previously worked at Book.

Forward appointed Dave Goldiner as deputy director of digital media and Bob Goldfarb as director of marketing and audience development, effective December 2011. Goldiner previously worked as a reporter and editor at New York Daily News, while Goldfarb previously served as president at The Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity.
