Tulsa is the second-largest city in the state of Oklahoma (after Oklahoma City) and the county seat of Tulsa County. It is home to 15 institutions of higher education including the University of Tulsa and Oral Roberts University, both privately owned.
The Black Wall Street Massacre, also known as the Tulsa race massacre, began on May 31, 1921. It was provoked by white hysteria over the alleged assault of a young white woman by a young black man. The attack resulted in the loss of 150 to 300 lives and the destruction of 35 square blocks of the Greenwood District of Tulsa, at the time a wealthy black community. The Oklahoma Eagle called the event "one of the most heinous acts of domestic terrorism within the United States."
