The station began broadcasting on January 11, 1949 as WDTV Channel 3, an affiliate of the DuMont Television Network. Westinghouse Electric Corporation, which would change its name to CBS Corporation in the late 1990s, bought WDTV in 1955 and quickly changed its call letters to KDKA.

-- Protestors chanting "kill him, kill him" attacked photojournalist Ian Smith, who works for CBS News affiliate KDKA TV in Pittsburgh, on May 30, 2020. The attackers also smashed Smith's camera.
Another group of protestors then intervened to form a protective wall around the injured Smith.
