The Spartanburg Herald-Journal covers local news and events in the city and county of Spartanburg, located in The Upstate region of South Carolina.
The newspaper began with the founding of The Spartan (circa 1842) and The Spartanburg Herald (circa 1872-1875). Around 1900, The Spartan was acquired by The Journal Publishing Company and re-named The Spartanburg Journal. Although the two papers gained a common owner in 1914, it was not until 1982 that they fully merged to form The Spartanburg Herald-Journal.
The Herald-Journal has been bought and sold may times through the years. The New York Times Company acquired the paper in 1985. On January 6, 2012, as part of a 16-newspaper deal worth $143 million, The New York Times Co. sold it to Halifax Media Holdings, LLC.
Halifax Media became part of GateHouse Media when GateHouse owner New Media Investment Group bought Halifax on January 9, 2015 for $280 million. On November 19, 2019, the paper became part of Gannett Company when New Media bought Gannett and merged GateHouse and Gannett under the Gannett name.
