The Hampton County Guardian was founded in August 1879 by Charleston newspaperman Miles Benjamin McSweeney. Morris Communications bought the newspaper in 2006, and in October 2017 sold it to GateHouse Media. On November 19, 2019, the paper became part of Gannett Company when the owner of GateHouse Media bought Gannett and merged it with GateHouse under the Gannett name.

This newspaper is owned by Gannett Company, Inc.
