The station began broadcasting on November 1, 1953. It was founded by Frank W. Mayborn, publisher of the Temple Daily Telegram newspaper. In January 2009, KCEN was sold to London Broadcasting Company of Dallas, Texas, at a reported purchase price of $26 million. The sale was completed on April 30, 2009. Gannett Company bought KCEN and five other London Broadcasting stations in 2014. In 2015, Gannett spun off its broadcast TV station division as Tegna Inc.
