KNKX was launched in 1966 as KPLU, a service of Pacific Lutheran University. In late 2015, the university said it would sell the station to the University of Washington, prompting great concern that its unique voice would be lost. A public fundraising effort resulted in the station being acquired by the nonprofit Pacific Public Media. In August 2016, it changed its call letters from KPLU to KNKX, which stands for "Connects."
