The newspaper was launched in the summer of 1872 by Sam Fifield as the Weekly Press. It switched to daily publication on March 5, 1888 as The Daily Press.

Murphy McGinnis Media bought the paper in 1996. Superior Publishing, a unit of investment firm MCG Capital Corporation, purchased the business on January 31, 2003. American Consolidated Media (ACM) bought the newspaper in 2007. On March 14, 2014, The Daily Press was one of a group of papers Adams Publishing Group bought from ACM. Today it is part of APG Media of Wisconsin which consists of six subscription newspapers and eight shoppers.
