The paper was founded in 1910 and acquired by Thomson Newspapers in 1978. Freedom Communications acquired the Dispatch in 1995. In March 2014, New Media Investment Group (owner of Gannett Company) bought the Desert Dispatch and the Victorville Daily Press from Freedom Communications for $8 million.

Steve Hunt Named Editor of the Desert Dispatch
-- In February 2014, Steve Hunt was named editor of the Desert Dispatch. He replaced David Keck who left to become sports editor of the Times of Northwest Indiana.
