The Washington County News covers local news in Chipley -- named after William Dudley Chipley, a railroad businessman and Florida state senator -- and the surrounding communities of Washington County in the Florida panhandle. The newspaper was founded in 1893.
GateHouse Media acquired the paper on January 9, 2015 as part of the $280 million sale of Halifax Media Group to New Media Investment Group Inc., which controls GateHouse. On November 19, 2019, the paper became part of Gannett Company when the owner of GateHouse Media bought Gannett and merged it with GateHouse under the Gannett name.
On February 1, 2021, Neves Media Publishing bought the Washington County News from Gannett Company along with three other Florida weeklies -- the Apalachicola Times, Port St. Joe Star and Holmes County Times-Advertiser.
In July 2023, Neves Media Solutions Group sold the Washington County News to the Kent Smith Group, LLC
