The Economist Magazine

The Economist is a magazine in the United Kingdom covering National News.

Based in London, The Economist is a weekly magazine covering business, politics and technology around the world. It is published worldwide and all editions include the same editorial matter. The Economist is somewhat eccentric in that its articles do not include writers' bylines (the name of the writer of each article). Also, the magazine refers to itself as a newspaper, saying it is "because it started off as a newspaper, and the habit stuck," which makes one wonder if the staff still wear diapers.

The first issue of The Economist was a broadsheet newspaper dated September 2, 1843. It was founded by Scottish economist and banker James Wilson, whose aim was to promote economic freedom and the principles of "free trade, internationalism and minimum interference by government." Today the magazine says it is not attached to any political party and that its public agenda is "liberal in the classical sense," emphasizing support and expansion of individual freedoms.

British publishing company Pearson PLC owned 50% of The Economist Group until 2015, when it sold part of its interest in the business to Exor, the investment company of the Agnelli family of Italy, which founded the Fiat car business. Exor now controls 43% of the company and is its largest shareholder. Pearson's remaining shares were bought back by the The Economist Group.

This magazine is owned by The Economist Group.

The website is presented in the English language.
