Al Jazeera America (AJAM) was a cable news channel owned by Qatar-based Al Jazeera Media Network, providing domestic and international news for American audiences. The service stopped publishing new stories on February 26 and shut down completely on April 12, 2016, due to what the company described as an unsustainable business model.
The service was launched on August 20, 2013, after Al Jazeera bought Al Gore's Current TV for $500 million in January 2013. The purchase gave the channel a solid base of distribution on American cable TV. Al Jazeera America was headquartered in New York City, with news bureaus in other major American cities. The company continues to serve American and other English-speaking audiences with the website Al Jazeera English.
