Wired was founded in March 1993 by journalist Louis Rossetto, his partner Jane Metcalfe and Ian Charles Stewart. Published in San Francisco, the magazine reports on how technology affects culture, the economy and politics.
Magazine and newspaper publisher Advance Publications bought Wired magazine in 1998, paying $75 to $80 million. Wired became part of Advance Publication's magazine division, Condé Nast.

Nicholas Thompson Named Wired Magazine Editor
-- In February 2017, Nicholas Thompson replaced Scott Dadich as the editor in chief of Wired Magazine. Before taking the job, Thompson was a senior editor at The New Yorker and then the editor of newyorker.com.

Scott Dadich Named Editor-in-Chief of Wired Magazine
-- November 19, 2012: Dadich was formerly the creative director at Conde Nast, where he oversaw all of the company's digital publishing activities. Before that he was creative director at Wired from 2006 to 2010.
Dadich replaces Chris Anderson, who recently decided to leave the tech magazine after 11 years.
