The magazine was founded in 1969 by pop artist Andy Warhol and John Wilcock, a British journalist. It was shut down in May 2018 by owner Brant Publications, a business operated by Peter M. Brant, a contemporary art collector. The company announced on May 21, 2018 that the assets of the magazine would be liquidated in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing. It resumed publication in September 2018.
