People is a USA magazine covering People and Gossip.
People Magazine publishes news about the lives of celebrities, focusing on Hollywood and the entertainment industry along with some coverage to the not-so-rich and famous. Its first issue was dated March 4, 1974 and the magazine quickly became wildly popular. In 2006, it had about $1.5 billion in advertising revenue.
The New York Times published an obituary of Richard "Dick" Stolley, the founding editor of People magazine who died on July 16, 2021. In it, Katharine Q. Seelye wrote that Stolley viewed the magazine's mission as being "to write about ordinary people doing extraordinary things and extraordinary people doing ordinary things, but never about ordinary people doing ordinary things."
Despite widespread and commoditized coverage of celebrities across digital media, People has prospered during the internet age -- unlike most of its peers. It has consistently been among the most popular paid-circulation magazines in the United States. From 2000 to 2020 its subscriber count grew from 2.1 million to 2.7 million. By one measure, today it has a total monthly audience of 88 million adults. Editor Dan Wakeford has said "we set the cultural conversation," which given People's reach is not quite as ridiculous as it sounds.
The now-defunct Meredith Corporation acquired People magazine on January 31, 2018 as part of its purchase of Time Inc. for $2.8 billion. The acquisition added many large circulation consumer magazines to the Meredith publishing portfolio including People Magazine and Entertainment Weekly. On December 1, 2021, Meredith's national magazine business was sold for $2.7 billion to the Dotdash division of IAC; it is now called Dotdash Meredith.
It is one of the worst American media outlets, according to Mondo Times members.
This magazine is owned by Dotdash Meredith.
