The New Statesman is a British magazine covering progressive and liberal politics and culture which describes itself as "one of the most respected and influential titles in the United Kingdom." It has published the writing of many noted scholars, commentators and artists including George Orwell, Virginia Woolf, Martin Amis, John Maynard Keynes, Bertrand Russell, Christopher Hitchens and Clive James.
The magazine was founded on April 12, 1913 as a weekly review of politics and literature by Sidney and Beatrice Webb, with support from George Bernard Shaw and H G Wells. The Webbs were members of the Fabian Society, a British organization that promotes democratic socialism. The Webbs were also the co-founders of the London School of Economics.
