-- The names of 59 journalists killed in 2010, as well as 18 from previous years, will be added to the Newseum's Journalist Memorial, which honors newspeople who died or were killed in the pursuit of news.
Novaya Gazeta co-owner Alexander Lebedev and Krishna Bharat, founder and head of Google News, will speak at the dedication ceremony.
"Journalists are being targeted at unprecedented levels," said Charles L. Overby, chairman and chief executive officer of the Newseum. "The dangers facing journalists in conflicts around the world seem to be getting worse, not better."
Pakistan topped the list for 2010 as the deadliest country in the world for journalists, with ten journalists having died there in a series of events. Four of the seven journalist deaths in Mexico appear to have been directly linked to journalists' coverage of the government's seemingly endless battle with drug traffickers. Six journalists died covering the conflicts in Iraq.
As of 2011, the Journalist Memorial bears the names of 2,084 reporters, photographers, broadcasters and news executives from around the world, dating back to 1837.
The Newseum ceremony will take place May 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.
