-- It was previously reported that Jonah Lehrer recycled some of his older writings in blog posts and articles.
Now, in Jonah Lehrer Resigns From New Yorker After Making Up Dylan Quotes for His Book, the New York Times says that Lehrer has resigned as a staff writer for the New Yorker magazine -- in yet another incident raising questions about why a talented writer feels the need to taint his material.
According to an article in the online Tablet magazine [its web site was listed as offline as of this writing], Lehrer admitted that he made up quotes from Bob Dylan in Lehrer's book, "Imagine."
More from the Times's report, published July 30, 2012:
""Three weeks ago, I received an email from journalist Michael Moynihan asking about Bob Dylan quotes in my book 'Imagine,'" Mr. Lehrer said in a statement. "The quotes in question either did not exist, were unintentional misquotations, or represented improper combinations of previously existing quotes. But I told Mr. Moynihan that they were from archival interview footage provided to me by Dylan's representatives. This was a lie spoken in a moment of panic. When Mr. Moynihan followed up, I continued to lie, and say things I should not have said."
"The lies are over now."
