-- The latest Digital News Report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford is definitely not good news for the business of journalism.
The global report shows that under half (42%) of people say they trust most news most of the time. By country, trust in the news is highest in Finland (69%) and lowest in the United States (26%).
Related to the decline in trust is an increase in outright avoidance of the news. In the USA, 42% of news consumers say they avoid news often or sometimes. In terms of political leaning, a large majority of those on the right (65%) say news is untrustworthy or biased, versus just 20% of those on the left. For those on the left, 57% say they avoid the news because it "brings down my mood," a result almost the same among those on the right (54%).
In the 20 countries where online payment is widespread, just 17% said they paid for any online news. The payment rate is highest in Norway (41%) and Sweden (33%), with the United States at 19%.
