-- As of August 1, 2023, five of the six daily newspapers in Maine are now owned by the nonprofit Maine Trust for Local News, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Local News. The only daily paper in Maine still published for profit is the Bangor Daily News. The Maine Trust also publishes 17 weekly papers in the state.

The change in ownership was the choice of Reade Brower, the former owner of the newspaper group. Brower, a Maine businessman, started buying newspapers in the state in 2015 when he purchased MaineToday Media, the newspaper group that owns the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal in Augusta and the Waterville Morning Sentinel. As of October 2019, Brower controlled six of Maine's seven daily newspapers and over 20 weekly publications through MaineToday Media, Mainely Media and Masthead Maine.
