Her son Casey was killed in action in Sadr City, Iraq on April 4, 2004. Cindy Sheehan is a founding member of Gold Star Families for Peace, an organization founded in January 2005 that seeks to end the occupation of Iraq and provide support for families of fallen soldiers.
